Gender and ethnic diversity are extremely uncommon in Christian charities and para-church ministries, with the majority leadership, board, and executive roles being filled by white males. Over half of the 33 ministries contacting for a report on diversity refused to reply, with some dismissing the report as “political correctness.” However, Compassion International and Youth for Christ leaders reported that diversity are critically important for ministries.
Why this story matters for church leaders:
The church is growing the most internationally and as women achieve equality in work and position in America, the church needs to ask important questions about equality and diversity.
- Charity: There are Christians who can reconcile women in leadership with the Bible and Christians who can’t, but can both sides find common ground to treat each other with respect and grace?
- Community and Diversity:It’s generally ideal for a church to reflect the demographics of its community. What does that look like for your church?
- Empowerment: Unity and diversity means empowering those who have been left out of positions of influence. How do we bring diversity and greater empowerment in our communities?
