Will Congress Decree “Darwin Day”?

February 12th marked the 204th birthday Charles Darwin. While this is nothing surprising (his birthday comes every year), what is notable is that New Jersey Democrat Rush Holt tried to commemorate the day through House Resolution 41, which called on the body to recognize “Darwin Day.”

This resolution has caused a bit of a stir among some Christian members of Congress, and others within the evangelical community.

In this edition of Ministry Briefing, we ask the question:

Do YOU care if there is a Darwin Day or not?

    LOL! Todd;
    Where do you get these great topics. I’m actually chuckling as I read this entry. I frankly don’t know what to think.
    The teaching of evolution is already a part of many text books in our schools, and in many churches, evolution is considered as viable as creation.
    You do have to admit the Darwin stirred up a hornets nest. So in that regard he is a notable figure in history.
    On another note, here in California we have Csesar Chavez day. Depending on which side of the fence you’re on, some consider him a saint, others a more defrocked form of a human being.
    Darwin was a scientist with an idea or alternative to creation. If there weren’t other “believers” his theories would have passed away. Some thought his ideas had merit and a whole new science began on both sides. Those trying to “prove” it, and those trying to “disprove” the claims.
    I’m only offering an opinion, if we have a day commemorating him, we might bring to light more discussion (and argument/conflict), but we might find there’s a lot of folks in the middle who don’t think about it much. This might help the conversation along.
    Just a shot in the dark
    James
