Looking back at the preaching of Jesus, the two elements that stand out in particular are his authority and his passion. His authority came from his confidence that he was sharing a message from God, while his passion was an overflow of the Holy Spirit. We can’t manufacture our own authority and passion. They must come from God and filter into our preaching.
Why this matters for church leaders:
Jesus’ preaching was confident, authoritative, and inspired by the Holy Spirit. Do church leaders leave themselves enough time to study scripture and to draw near to God before preaching?
- Too busy not to pray? Church leaders have many demands on their time, but if our congregations want them to lead and preach effectively, they need time for Bible study and prayer. Do our leaders have enough time for either?
- Who helps church leaders make healthy decisions? Church leaders can feel lonely, isolated, and burned out. Is there a staff member who keep stabs of the pastor’s spiritual state? Can a pastor get a spiritual director or counselor?
- Do you talk to other pastors? Some of the most important support a pastor can receive will be from fellow pastors who share ideas for preaching, time management, and prayer. They’ll also help with the isolation hat many pastors feel.
