Stable Income Is Key to Stable Families

Researchers argue that while some have tried to link shifting family dynamics with a loss in financial stability and job opportunities, they cite a number of studies that demonstrate that job stability is often connected with stable families. One study found that military families, both black and white, tend to be stable with low divorce rates most likely because the variable of income and job searching has been resolved for soldiers. Same Sex Marriage Divides PC(USA) for Upcoming Vote

A new Barna poll found that 40% of American Christians have a sense of divine calling in their lives, and 48% of Millennials sense a call to do something else with their lives, but they have yet to make the change. Overall, 75% of American adults are looking for ways to live a more meaningful life. Source: Barna Research

Church Stops and Cancels Funeral in Progress Because of Same Sex Spouse

Pastor Ray Chavez of New Hope Ministries in Colorado stopped the funeral for Vanessa Collier when he noticed pictures of Collier with her wife, Christina along with their two children, who were 12 and 8. The funeral was cancelled because Chavez refused to officiate a funeral for a gay couple, and the church has yet to reimburse the family for the funeral expenses. Source: Denver Post

Majority of Americans Identify as Christians

A new study found that 75% of Americans are still self-identifying as Christian, and 8 in 10 saying that they attend religious services. Of those who identify as Christian, half are Protestant and a quarter are Catholic. Of those who use the general classification of “religious,” 90% are Christian. Source: Christianity Today

Voters Nominate the Most Hated Words of 2014

In Lake Superior State University’s 40th annual list of words nominated for banishment by members of the public, over 800 entries were submitted before a final list of words were chosen by the committee based on them being overused or misused. The 2014 list included: bae, hack, foodie, Polar Vortex, enhanced interrogation, and “cra-cra.” Source: Chicago Sun Times keep reading

Can a sex offender be the senior pastor of a local church? One church in Texas has just hired Claude Gilliland III to be their new pastor… the problem is… Gilliland is a registered sex offender. When the local newspaper started printing the names and pictures of local sex offenders, imagine the surprise when his picture was listed. Matt Steen and I talk about their thoughts on this story… how much grace should be offered… etc. sex offender

Church Invests Financial Windfall Back into Community

A Chicago church that made $1.6 from a property sale set aside $160,000 as a tithe and gave it to the congre- gation in $500 checks. The checks came with no strings attached, but members were encouraged to use the checks to support local charities or to help people in need. Members used their checks to buy winter coats for those in need, to build skate parks in lower income areas, and to fund shelters and community service groups. Source:  Post Bulletin keep reading
