Electronic Giving: Will cell phones replace the offering plate?

Electronic giving is really taking off for churches all over the country.  Many churches are using online giving to supplement the offering plate.  Some churches are using giving kiosks in their lobbies.

The truth is… many people just don’t use checks any more.

And another truth:  people (especially the next generation) are pretty much joined at the hip with their mobile cell phones.

So… could cell phones eventually replace the offering plate?

At some point in the future, rather than having the ushers coming forward to receive the offering, will you just tell people to pull out their cell phones to take the offering.

Giving via cell phone has never been easier.  But will it catch on?

Matt Steen and I discuss in today’s Ministry Briefing:

Church Staff: What to do BEFORE you hire your next staff member

Church staff are the front line of church leadership.

Every church needs to hire well.

Many churches don’t.

In fact, many churches make the same mistakes over and over.

TJ Addington makes some great suggestions on things that churches should consider before they hire their next staff person.  TJ writes:

One of the top leadership tasks is to hire well. Every hire impacts the entire organization in a ripple fashion. Hire well and the organization becomes healthier and more effective. Hire poorly and the organization suffers. I am a fan of the concept, “hire slow, fire fast.” Being slow on the hire allows you to avoid a lot of pain later.

Matt Steen and I talk about what we think you should discuss and plan on BEFORE you start the hiring process the next time at your church:

Is Yoga something to get upset about? This parent thinks so…

One school district in California is mandating Yoga classes for their 5,000 students as a kind of “21st Century P. E.”. This has a handful of Christian parents upset.

Is Yoga something, as Christians and church leaders, to take a stand on? Mark Driscoll has said that he thinks Yoga is ‘demonic’?

Watch and listen as Matt Steen and I tackle this subject, and start the conversation…

Jesus was a Dirty, Dirty God

Johnnie Moore is the author of Dirty God (#DirtyGod). He is a professor of religion and vice president at Liberty University. Keep track of him @johnnieM .

Johnnie thinks that Jesus was a lot more like you than you think, and a lot less clean cut than this iconic image of him that floats around culture.

He thinks that despite the Christian belief that Jesus was both fully God and fully man, Jesus was a rather dirty God.

Matt Steen and I discuss the book and the concept in this short video.

dirty dirty god

Watch Jesus was a Dirty, Dirty God now…

From the CNN article:

Jesus was a lot more like you than you think, and a lot less clean cut than this iconic image of him that floats around culture.

You know the image. It’s the one where Jesus is walking like he’s floating in robes of pristine white followed by birds singing some holy little ditty. He’s polished, manicured, and clearly – God.

But despite the Christian belief that Jesus was both fully God and fully man, Jesus was a rather dirty God.

He was the “earthly” son of a carpenter, and life in the first-century was both more lurid and unfinished than our collective religious memory seems to recall.

To that end, I suggested recently to several astounded colleagues of mine that Jesus actually had to go to the bathroom, perhaps even on the side of the road between Capernaum and Jerusalem.

What tipped them over the edge was when I insinuated that Jesus, like almost every other human being living in the rural world in that time, might have even had dysentery on an occasion or two.

Someone said, “You mean that Jesus might have had severe diarrhea?”

“Yep,” I replied, “That’s exactly what I mean.”

It seems like an obvious statement if you believe that Jesus was “fully God” and “fully man” (as most evangelicals believe and call the Incarnation), but to some of us it seems in the least, inappropriate, and at the most, sacrilege, to imagine Jesus in this way. We might believe that God was also man, but we picture him with an ever-present halo over his head.

But, actually, the Jesus of the Bible was more human than most people are conditioned to think.

I call this the dirty side of Jesus. He was grittier, and a lot more like us than maybe we believe, and that’s one of the reasons why so many thousands of people followed him so quickly.

They could relate to him.

Westboro Baptist Church as our Crazy Uncle

Westboro Baptist Church just protests another funeral or event and makes national headlines.  Whether you like it or not… every time someone from Westboro Baptist Church goes out and does a protest with signs that read “God Hates Fags”, many people group them in with you and I as Christians.

And every time someone speaks to the media as a Christian, some people look and you and me and automatically assume that we think the same exact thing.

It could be on any issue: homosexuality, gun control… really any thing.

Let’s face it… the likes of Westboro Baptist are really our crazy uncle… you know, the one you’re always apologizing for… the one that says things you don’t agree with… the one that’s a jerk… the one that embarasses the life right out of you.

Matt Steen and I talk about this phenomenia… and how we should deal with our own ‘crazy uncles’.

Church Hires Sex Offender as Senior Pastor

Can a sex offender be the senior pastor of a local church? One church in Texas has just hired Claude Gilliland III to be their new pastor… the problem is… Gilliland is a registered sex offender. When the local newspaper started printing the names and pictures of local sex offenders, imagine the surprise when his picture was listed.

Matt Steen and I talk about their thoughts on this story… how much grace should be offered… etc.

Five Comments Pastors HATE!

Pastor criticism. It’s amazing how many stupid comments people can make to church leaders. I’ve heard my fair share over the years… but I wonder… what are the things that have been said to you that are the most outlandish?

Matt Steen and I discuss the 5 comments that pastors absolutely hate to hear. Taken from an article by John Ortberg at Leadership Journal:

Why do you have to be so negative all the time?

Seth Godin says: Human beings, thanks to culture and genetics, are inclined to be pessimistic, fearful, skeptical and believers in conspiracy theories. We also don’t like change.

Truth is… this describes the outlook of many churches as well.

Matt Steen and I take a look inside this phenomena that causes churches, more often than not, to build their base on negativity.
