Signs of a Church that Won’t Last Long

Thom Rainer writes that there are four types of churches that will not last much longer. While most agree that a church failing to teach the Bible faithfully will soon struggle, there are other churches in for hard times if they don’t change, such as the churches that function like country clubs, churches that have contentious meetings, and churches that don’t match their communities.

Why this story matters for church leaders: Nothing will ever stay the same for long in ministry, so it’s possible that these problems could be developing sooner than later if they aren’t already in full bloom.
  • Outside Perspective: A new member or an elder in touch with new members may be a valuable source of information about your church’s particular quirks and challenges.
  • Sooner than Later: Contentiousness, incorrect teachings, or demographic changes are all problems that you can detect today. If you’re aware of these issues, you may be able to prevent them from becoming serious.
  • Get Help! Sometimes an outside mediator or expert can help your church work through these challenges, especially if there are contentious members who need another perspective to help them move forward.
Does one of these four problems seem particularly relevant to your church right now? Find this story interesting?  It’s just one of dozens of stories great leaders are reading about this week in Ministry Briefing! All readers of my blog can get the next four issues of Ministry Briefing for just $1!
