As Martin Luther posted his 95 theses against the sale of indulgences, he had modest hopes of sparking debate within the Catholic Church. However, Luther’s points were soon picked up by the local printing press and began to sell in large numbers. Within months, his words spread throughout Europe because printers saw a valuable opportunity to profit from Luther’s words.
