Pastors Share about Transitions Out of Ministry

This is an article from this week’s Ministry Briefing:

In a series of interviews, Ed Stetzer asked pastors how they have stepped out of their ministry leadership roles and appointed successors. In some cases the pastors moved onto another ministry role outside church leadership, while others moved into a leadership development role that still left the new pastor to lead without interference.

He writes:

Most, if not all, of the responses I received were of positive experiences, and I was thankful for that. But, pastor transition can be difficult, so I am not under the impression that everyone has had a good experience with a pastor who has transitioned out of a lead role and into a support or even volunteer role.

Why is this important?

  • Rick Warren, Bill Hybels, and others are getting older
  • Intentional process matters
  • Seniors had a clear understanding of their post-senior role
  • What about smaller churches, where budget is a concern?
