Pastor jailed because he won’t change his church’s name

OK… this is odd…

Tennessee pastor Walter McGill is sitting in jail for ignoring a court order to change his church’s name.

The name of his church:  Creation Seventh Day Adventist Church.  The problem… that’s also the name of another larger church (0r group of churches) from the same name.  In fact, McGill’s church used to be a part of that group, but broke off, and decided to keep the name.

Not so fast.  The original Creation Seventh Day Adventist Church sued.

And now McGill is in jail, refusing to eat and vowing to never (ever) change the name of his church.

More here.

Here HAS to be a lot more to this story, doesn’t there?

  1. Talk about choosing the wrong hill to die on. Then again, the name says to me that he already majors on minors.

I think it’s probably a trademark thing, but because he is refusing to do what the judge says he’s in jail for contempt of court. I’m pretty sure I couldn’t call my company Apple and sell phones without similar action, so I think this isn’t a church story, but more of a “guy jailed for failing to change his business name after split with founding organization” story.

  2. Actually, the larger church is “Seventh-day Adventist,” not “Creation Seventh Day Adventist.” The names are different, albeit similar.

  3. Fred says:

Remember that scripture in the Bible where Jesus taught the disciples to guard their ministry logo. Jesus knew that branding was crucial to competing for donations. lol

  4. Another example of a church focusing on preferances rather than the mission of Jesus. It’s a name, let it go, move on and focus on what really matters- the gospel. The goal of satan is to distract us from what we are called here to do, and he’s doing a darn good job of it.

  5. There is more to this than you may be willing to see. A little sensitivity is required to discern the hearts of those you do not quite understand. I forgive you for your insensitivity.

If you support liberty of conscience and would like to see the persecution stopped, please sign the Liberty Petition. http://libertypetition.com/ Thank you.
