Pastor and son charged after alleged parking lot rage…

I’m not happy to say that this happened in my home state… According to WBNS-TV

Two church leaders, a father and son, face criminal charges after police say a parking lot dispute turned violent.

Pastor Bennett Smith leads The Church at Polaris. His son Paul Smith is an associate pastor there.

The Church at Polaris sits on Gemini Place, right across the street from Polaris Fashion Place.

Church staffers say the heavy traffic that plagues the area has led nearby residents to use the church parking lot as a cut-through — a conflict that police say caused the pastor and his son to forget their teachings and turn to violence.

Online videos of Pastor Bennett Smith show him making light of the ongoing traffic troubles in his church parking lot.

“We put all those curbs in, right? We paid a lot of money,” said Pastor Bennett Smith. “And I’ve been waiting for someone to just run over that at full speed, but it hasn’t happened yet, so I was a little disappointed.”

Have you ever come close to punching someone in the throat or other violence as a church leader?

I think until people have walked in his shoes they shouldn’t judge.judging is Gods responsibility as Christians we are supposed to pray for one another are any of you praying for him and his family I don’tthink so with the comments you all are posting. Is your life perfect have you not made any mistakes. II’m pretty sure God doesn’t like gossip. So until you are perfect you shouldn’t be attacking him and is family. God will take care of things and deal with his heart if he is wrong.

WHy not work it to their advantage and offer drive-thru coffee instead? Do some ministry. Is this really a problem? Pastor seems pretty arrogant – especially when he calls the people he’s called to reach – “freaking insane”. SAD.

Its interesting the church’s slogan is “Love God, Love People, Serve The World.” We’ll love you as long as you don’t try to cut through our parking lot, then we will serve you a knuckle sandwich.

It would be a different story if this guy who cut through the parking lot had run over a child from the church daycare. Everyone would be cheering the Pastors on.

These guys definitely crossed the line, but I would be angry at people who endangered people in my church parking lot.

Thank you, Denise for your coverage and investigation. Unfortunately, there will always be abuses of leadership, I have seen it many times in different churches in several states. As you investigate, please remember for every “scandal” there is thousands of churches that get it right. I pray that as you find the wrong, you will also find the right. God bless and thank you again!

My husband was the man chased out of the parking lot with his “big truck” He lied from the pulpit saying that my husband was clocked going 50 plus and lied on a face book in a charlie sheen rant at 3 am in the morning — and we have dash cam to prove them as lies too. The CPD that showed up said that he didnt know what the pastor was talking about, there was no damage to the parking lot that the pastor claimed he saw my husband do. All my husband did was turn around in the parking lot at 5:15AM when he saw the gates were closed. The pastor chased him out like a crazed lunatic!!!!! The day care doesnt even open for another 45 minutes so who was he protecting??

    • Tomzspot May 22, 2013 Reply

Shilo. I used to attend that church after Bennett took over. I knew Bennett personally. This incident does not surprise anybody that used to attend there. Bennett is a liar and a manipulator. He lied many times to my wife and I who were also in ministry there with him. We left the church not too long after all that. And now attend a home church because we are tired of the politics that “church” has created. We knew that this would happen some day. Bennett has run out good people, including former members of his own staff, when they didn’t agree with him. Bennett fits the clinical description of a “sociopath”.

Bennett and Paul should immediately step down and then repent to your husband, the church and to God for his actions.

This is a very sad day for Christianity.

Thanks for that affirmation. After being attacked and humiliated from the pastor at the pulpit and on Face book, it is nice to hear we are not alone. We have also in the past 5 days, we have also experienced the following.

I have been asked by the current worship leaders wife to meet her in person so she could see if I was in tough in person as I am on Face book through a private message,

I have seen posts in the comment section after the 10tv news asking me how I would like it if someone drove in my drive way etc…. and coincidentally we had someone block our driveway around 10 that evening and sit in front of our house.

We have had people call and breath on the other line without saying anything. It sounds to me that his members, family, and staff, have nothing better to do then to intimidate a family and thier children. I’m not sure who is doing it, but unlike them I have left it in the hands of law enforcement, our attorney, and plan on contacting the prosecuting attorney with this information.

        • Tomzspot May 22, 2013 Reply

I think you understand that the actions of one church do not represent the actions of all churches! 🙂 The vast majority of churches are good ones with good, humble leaders.

I hope you won’t hold Christianity accountable for the actions of one. Keep looking. And when you find one be at peace.

BTW, most church bylaws have a clause in them that the Board can remove a pastor if they are in sin. Notice that I didn’t say “have” sinned, because we all do. “In” sin means that it is ongoing and constantly. That is where my remarks came from above that they need to be removed and they need to repent to all involved.

Now we’ll see if they really are “men of God” or not.

I am not swayed by my faith, but am definitely swayed by church and not eager to jump in with both feet anywhere for the last 3 years. I used to love my church but one day when i described it as fun, I realized I had nothing else. just fun. Not life changing, not challenging, not biblical, and definitely not healthy. I laughed at the same cruel jokes about other people that people laugh at now. I cannot believe that if we are supposed to be like Jesus, He would ever condone hurting people from the pulpit for fun.

          • Tomzspot May 22, 2013

Very well said. Unfortunate, but true. You are not alone. If the board doesn’t act, then it is just a church of “man”. If they do act, it is truly a church of “God”.

Cindy, you are correct that none of us are perfect. But you are completely wrong about the judging. It is CLEARLY stated in scripture that Elders are to judge other Elders. Yes, sheep are never to judge. But Elders can even pronounce judgement on those in sin.

Your very statement above shows your lack of biblical training and understanding. In it you are clearly judging the people on this blog for their words, something that is not allowed in scripture.

Since you are in Dayton (and to all the others on this blog that are not from Columbus) you have no idea what is going on. There are many of us that know this man and his family. What is said here is true.

I grew up in this church from the time I was young until about 4 years ago. My parents were married there, and have known Bennett for years. I have travelled internationally with Bennett and Paul and have served in various facets of ministry over the years with that church. I can say that this is nothing surprising, considering Bennett’s personality. Bennett has always been an egomaniac and has in many cases bordered on sociopathy. Since leading that church, he has pushed literally hundreds away, lost friends due to his lack of integrity, and tarnished the name of that church.
A number of years ago, Bennett brought about 6-7 of his closest friends to work at the church as pastors. They all came from other successful churches around the midwest and were promised great things. Within 5 years all of them were gone but one. (Keith) And they all are of the same mindset when it comes to Bennett. The reason? After working under Bennett they realized how terrible he really was, they realized his incredible lack of moral value, and how consistently untruthful he really was.

I would never go back to TCAP while he is pastor and I know many who echo that opinion. Both Bennett and Paul have demonstrated the antithesis of what Christ showed in loving people and I hope that this doesn’t reflect on how people see those who follow Christ. Fortunately, only the minority is like Bennett.

The church made quite a haul selling off property, and consequently adding to the commercial build up in the area. I used to cut through there until I was asked not to. I now go around. It would be nice for them to create some sort of way to work it to their advantage and provide a service to their neighbors who live in the area. That would be the Christian thing to do. I always drove extra slow when I cut through but often observed others driving very agressively. I knew it was a matter of time before the short cut was closed off. I did attend this church one time. I did not feel comfortable there however, I do not know anything other than that. I am just googling churches in the area and stumbled across this story.

More bad news for the CAP. Bennett needs to resign…again… for the good of the church. The Board should remove him. Most church bylaws/constitution allow for the Leadership team to remove in this case.
Look, we all sin. But this goes beyond that. Bennett should not even be a pastor, nor his son. Neither meets the minimum criteria set in scripture.

My other question is why is Paul not resigning also? He should also be removed.

There is only 1 good outcome for TCAP; and it requires both of them to resign. it will show the community that TCAP lives up to the Bible behind the church. If they don’t resign, members will leave in droves, except for the “grape cool-aide” crowd. God shall not be mocked. His word never returns void.

Make the right decision for the sake of the sheep and the reputation of the church as a whole!

    • TCAP member November 5, 2013 Reply

i agreed with you until you called those left the “kool-aid” drinkers. Don’t assume those left drank Bennetts kool aid. We are there because we love OUR church…God’s church and we know this is in God’s hands and the best outcome for TCAP will happen. Most of us left know the truth and are there to fight for the church we love. We want to put this all behind us and re-build a healthy, Christ-like church where we actually do LOVE GOD, LOVE PEOPLE and SERVE THE WORLD!

      • TCAP member November 5, 2013 Reply

I need to apologize. I read your post incorrectly. You are correct. We in fact WILL leave in droves if Bennett and Paul come back. We are praying that will not be God’s will.

  • A. Amos Love September 7, 2013 Reply

    You write…
“Bennett should not even be a pastor, nor his son. Neither meets the minimum criteria set in scripture.”

    Was wondering…
    For a pastor today…
What is “the minimum criteria set in scripture.”?

    • Tomzspot September 7, 2013 Reply

The criteria has never changed. 1 Peter 5:2,3 for starters. “being examples to the flock”. I Tim 3 and Titus 1 lay out the criteria for any church leader or Elder, which a Pastor is one.

Remember, I’m not saying there isn’t repentance. There is. (although with the way this is going, I don’t know.) Repentance puts us back in right standing with God. But doesn’t restore us to pastor-ship. And real repentance means “turning and not doing that which you did in the first place. To start doing the opposite.”

The real issue is that Bennett never did qualify to be a shepherd. The tendencies that he is exhibiting now, he has exhibited before he was a Pastor and all during his Youth Pastor and Senior Pastor days.

If you read the above statements they all testify of a heart that is not changed. He may talk the talk, but his actions are not pastoral. Now I don’t believe everything I read but I can agree with the statements above because I knew Bennett. My wife was also hurt by him. There are countless people that he has hurt in some way. And it wasn’t just because of differences of opinion. Many left the church because of his un-scriptural leading of the people and conduct unbecoming of a pastor.

None of these things that I have read in the Court documents surprise me… none of them! It is just the same thing over and over.

      Here is the document:

The only outcome that is best for TCAP is for him to resign “officially” again. If he continues to lead the church will be a dictatorship.

If he really loved his congregation and TCAP as he says he does, he would do what is best for them.

Pray for TCAP. This could be the end.

    • tomzspot September 21, 2013 Reply

We’re not talking about all His children. We’re talking about one and the reasons why he should resign. And the scripture that you quoted was taken out of context. The woman in question was repentant. I’m not judging him. If he were repentant this wouldn’t be dragging on this long and he and Paul would’ve resigned.

  • Me September 28, 2013 Reply

What exactly is the issue with Paul? He seems to be qualified and is still young, but after seeing him online several times, shows a lot of promise. You say you aren’t judging but aren’t you just lumping him in with his dad? People make mistakes. This blog is brutal and seems very quick to turn on their own. Doesn’t say a whole lot for ‘Christians’ but way to perpetuate the stereotype.

    • TCAP member November 5, 2013 Reply

Paul has done many things on his own free will that are not leadership qualities. The staff do not trust him due to his own actions…not his fathers. He was extremely biased during this entire thing, then when he saw it wasn’t going their way, he flipped and said he wasn’t on his dads side even though he signed a restraining order request against staff, board member and church member. he has also done many immature things since he was laid off. believe me. he was neither qualified nor showed promise as a spiritual leader. I am extremely disappointed in him. This was a defining moment in his life and he chose wrong. I wish him well, and truly hope he learns from his mistakes and those of his fathers and does not follow in his footsteps.

I just am baffled how adult children…especially a son be ok with what his father is doing to his mother and their marriage. sad.

NOT one, of His Disciples, called themself, pastor/leader/reverend?
NOT one, of His Disciples, called another Disciple, pastor/leader/reverend?
NOT one, of His Disciples, had the “Title/Position,” pastor/leader/reverend?

Less than 24 hours after that, posts this comment in response to another comment on a post about the Buckeyes BBall team: “We’ll see. If my income wasn’t frozen since September then i would submit my Bracket and Win some money. Oh well hopefully this bullshit lawsuit will be over soon and I can get some back pay.”

Not, hopefully it will be over and I can fulfill God’s call on my life.

Not, hopefully it will be over and I can start over again and try to pastor, lead people, etc.

Not, hopefully it will be over and I can begin to operate in my gifts.

Nope. He wants it to be over so he can get PAID. Period. The ministry always was and will always be viewed as a payday to him.
