Members of both the Southern Baptist and American Baptist Church are being inspired by the state of Missouri’s post-Civil War plan to unite Baptists from both sides of the conflict. “How can we be just Baptists again, without an adjective, like we were in those years after the Civil War?” said Judson University chancellor Jerry Cain.
Why this story matters for Church Leaders:
No denomination is without division, even local congregations can split over issues from carpet color to worship style, where do you need to look to find healing?
- Preventative Medicine– the best approach for any church split is to prevent it from happening in the first place, what steps can you take to bring opposing sides together?
- History Matters– It’s important to know where we come from, what rifts in your church’s history can you learn more about? This will result in wisdom for today.
- Center Yourself– Ultimately it’s not the name on the sign that will change hearts and minds but the hearts of the people, are you focusing on issues that speak to
- the message of Christ or rather something that distracts from it?
How can you use this story to take an honest look at the divisive struggles in your own congregation?
