If America only had 100 people, a new study found that 36 would attend religious services weekly and 33 would go monthly, and then 30 would attend seldom or never. While 89 of Americans would believe in God, only 63 are absolutely certain that there is a God.
Why this story matters for church leaders:
Roughly 37% of Americans are on the fence about God or deny God’s existence, and that means ministry can’t be one-size fits all when addressing skeptics.
- On the Fence about God: There aren’t just people who believe in God and people who don’t. Many are on the fence, and they call for an intentional approach to discipleship that addresses their questions.
- Good Signs: There’s still a sizeable number of Americans who are confident in God’s existence, and that means their barriers to church may have more to do with personal experiences or shifting priorities.
- Shifts with Age: A striking 42% of Americans no longer identify with their childhood religion, which means retention is an important discussion when it comes to discipleship, but that trend can also be a good thing for outreach purposes.
What kinds of trends have your observed among those who have grown up in your church? Do they stay around or do they become unaffiliated?
