The Hoboken Grace Community Church in Hoboken, NJ offered to give Hoboken residents a $5.60 credit toward Uber rides if they needed a lift to church on Easter Sunday. The credit extended to the first 5,000 passengers who claimed the offer.
Why this story matters for church leaders:
Transportation is an especially important issue for people in economically disadvantaged areas or people who have hit hard times. With so many churches in the suburbs, paying for rides can offer one solution.
- How to plan an Uber outreach: This church does a few things particularly well, specifying both a limited number of Uber rides and a limit to the reimbursement. Be generous, but don’t leave your church vulnerable to misunderstandings!
- When do you offer Uber rides? If you consider adding this option at your church, consider setting time limits, such as only reimbursing for Sunday mornings.
- Consider your options: Bus and train systems can also provide critical transportation options to your church. Are there ways to partner with local charities in order to help people pay their way to services?
What transportation challenges do families and individuals in your neighborhood face?
