Lazy Volunteers and "Those People"

Who are THOSE people? Have you ever met THOSE people?

Seth Godin recently wrote about a community college administrator who wrote off a bunch of her students as not being able to excel… she considered them to be THOSE people that will flip burgers for the rest of their lives.

That didn’t set well with Seth, and it doesn’t set well with us.

So often, we set low expectations for people because they are “only volunteers,” as if being on church staff makes people so much more adept at serving the Kingdom.
Take a few minutes today and ask yourself: who are THOSE people in my mind?

I have been both a key volunteer and paid staff…

I agree that volunteers are able to serve at the same level of excellence as “paid staff” can. I agree that we can and should expect great things from unpaid staff…

…but in my experience, both in the workplace and in the church… “those people” who are content with mediocrity truly do exist. I’m thankful that there are often jobs and roles that can be meaningful that they can do well, even if they won’t (or can’t) “lead”.
