In what was intended to be a criticism of the Roman Catholic Church’s influence in South America and Central America, John MacArthur recently commented that Hispanic Christians do not have the full Gospel. When asked to clarify his comments, MacArthur said that the vast majority of the Hispanic world is trapped in the false doctrine of the Roman Catholic Church. However, many Hispanic believers are shifting to Pentecostal expressions of the Christian faith, with as many as 43% of Guatemalans identifying as Protestant in 2012.
Why this story matters for church leaders:
The growth of the Protestant church in Latin America, especially Pentecostal, is going to dramatically alter the Christian landscape worldwide and is even changing denominations such as The Assemblies of God.
- Where Is the Growth? The Pentecostal churches of Latin America are among the fastest growing churches in the world. What can pastors in America learn from them?
- Where Will Leaders Come From? The global south will produce many of the future leaders of the church. How will this reshape and challenge the influence of American leaders like MacArthur?
- Ministry Partnerships: There are new opportunities for ministry partnerships with churches in Latin America as they grow and send their own missionaries throughout the world.
Consider learning from a ministry in South America for new ministry ideas.
