InterVarsity, one of the largest Evangelical college groups in the country, has told it’s 1300 members that they will be dismissed for disagreeing with their newly penned policy on gay marriage. “If you are in disagreement, then we are going to ask you, with integrity, to identify that and leave” says InterVarsity VP Greg Jao.
Why this story matters for church leaders:
Intervarsity is a major player on college campuses across the country, this may have a direct effect on college congregants.
- Having a unified stance is important: Do you know what your church stance is on this and other hot button issues that top news cycles?
- Take time to engage your staff on this issue: Have you talked things over with your staff so that you engage your people from the same page?
- Create space for healthy discussion in your ministry: If disagreement comes into play, is your ministry a space for respectful disagreement?
How does your church handle the discussion on sexual ethics, is it something you’ve created space for or something bubbling beneath the surface?
