Dr. Ed Welch suggests that a young leader should walk alongside a leader who’s been doing this ministry gig for a while. When they see their friend struggle with the difficulties of ministry, it will change the way the look at their work and ministry:
Were you ever once a young, cocky leader?
How long did it take to cure you? And what broke you of your cockiness?

Ed is spot on! What broke me? Being laid off (1 of 3 staff members) from ministry after seeing a church of 500 disintegrate before our very eyes, having to work three part time jobs (which included delivering pizza). The root of our problem was pride. I was not a servant leader. I am not sure one ever recovers from this. I find myself checking on the issue of pride several times a week asking God to help me keep this in check.
I believe this is a larger problem among leadership then we want to admit, both within the church as well as secular positions as well.
