The art of job seeking and resume writing is constantly changing. After reviewing thousandsÂ at MinisterSearch, I’ve come up with 10 things to consider whenÂ writing a resume:
- Format â€“ as concise, to the point, and easy to read as possible â€“ donâ€™t write a novel (insert smiley face here)
- TheÂ EXPERIENCE section is by far the most important section of the resume â€“ use action oriented and descriptive bullet points to show how you can do the job for which you are applying
- The OBJECTIVE is no longer cool â€“ your objective is the job â€“ donâ€™t waste the real estate
- Dates should be on the RIGHT â€“ years only, no months
- In general, go back only 15 years unless there are SIGNIFICANT achievements before â€“ even if your older, donâ€™t let them know it (50 is the new 30)
- Donâ€™t list run-of-the-mill skills; i.e., PowerPoint, Excel, MS Wordâ€”makes you look like youâ€™re behind the times
- Send references on a separate sheet but not until youâ€™re asked
- CONTACT INFO – Donâ€™t label phone numbers, fax numbers or your address; only cell and email should be listed
- When you save your resume, name it so someone else understands what it is ex: david.lyons.resume.doc
