Former Mexican drug lord Joaquin “El Chapo” Guzman is back in prison after tunneling out. He has two guards who keep tabs on him, so he has since turned to reading books such as Don Quixote and The Purpose Driven Life by Rick Warren. Guzman has also put on weight since being captured.
Why this story matters for church leaders:
However Guzman got his hands on a copy of Rick Warren’s book, we never know when outreach will prove effective.
- One plants the seed and another waters: We don’t always see the results of our outreach efforts, but Guzman’s interest in The Purpose Driven Life is a high profile example of someone’s generosity in giving a book leading to interest in the Gospel.
- The role of prison ministry: America incarcerates more people than all other nations combined, making prison ministry an essential outreach for churches today.
- When is a conversion real? It’s possible that some prison inmates take up religion in order to get their sentences reduced, but our role is to keep sharing the Gospel to trust God with the results.
Are there ways your church can support a local prison ministry in your area?
