5Highland Church of Christ in Abilene has purchased St. Ann’s hospital in their city and has plans to turn the facility into housing for the city’s homeless. Through a partnership with a nonprofit named City Square and the help of other churches in town, the pastors of Highland Church of Christ announced that they hope to end systemic homelessness and to work together with fellow Christians in their city.
Why this story matters for church leaders:
A church took the lead in partnering with a local charity and purchasing a hospital, and soon many other churches joined in the project, making it possible to serve the homeless.
- United in Service:Congregations and regional churches can find unity by serving those in the greatest need, such as the homeless.
- Where Is the Need? Each town has its challenges. If you don’t have a large homeless population, how can you find out more about the particular struggles in your community?
- Communication Matters:A great vision and project are important, but this church invested time and money in communicating their work with the congregation.
