Churches Add Security in America

Churches Add Security in America

A series of threats and vandalism incidents in America have many church attendees on their guard in the event of a radical Islamist attack. With plentiful guns and easy online access to radical teachings, many fear that a church could be the next terror attack target after the murder of Rev. Jacques Hamel, in the Normandy town of St.-Étienne-du-Rouvray. Many churches are adding security guards and working on ways to prepare members for an attack.

Why this story matters for church leaders:

Security will become an important issue for the American church in the midst of radical extremists who may see churches as a key target.

  • A True Threat? The murder of a French priest by an ISIS extremist combined with threats against churches in America have some worried that an attack on a church could happen.
  • Preparations:S. law enforcement officials are taking security measures in some larger churches, but smaller to medium-sized churches should also review emergency procedures and may look into hiring security if necessary.
  • Security vs. Outreach: The majority of Muslims remain peace-loving and share many common values with Christians. Security threats from extremists should not prevent us from being good neighbors or sharing the Gospel.

Do you have someone at your church who can take charge of security issues?
