Highland Baptist Church hosts 40 1st through 5th grade students from Dean Highland Elementary School in order to provide play time, tutoring, homework help, and a Bible story. The program is called “WiN” which stands for “Wisdom and iNstruction from the Lord” and provides critical care for students while their parents finish work.
Why this story matters for church leaders:
An after school program meets an urgent need in a community while also giving children an opportunity to learn from the Bible.
- Volunteers First: A program like this needs a strong leader who can resource and train volunteers in order to provide the children with the support they need.
- Safety Is a Priority:Background checks, building security, and volunteer training are all essential for a program like this to succeed.
- Best Practices:A program like this needs planning and support from similar groups and experienced volunteers who know the best practices.
