Is Your Church Healthy or Declining?

Your church may be in a rut or on the decline if your focus is on meetings and not ministry, few guests show up for services, and there’s a general lack of interest during worship services. While a decline in attendance is an important trend to notice, it’s essential to note how frequently members attend as well.

There are several common signs of ministry decline that pastors should be prepared to identify and address.
  • Are you measuring declines? Declines in worship service attendance overall and frequency of worship service attendance are vitally important for understanding the larger trends if your church. If you don’t have guests or new believers, that’s a sign that your church may be on the decline.
  • Are relationships strained? Conflict over worship styles or church business are signs that a church may be declining. Leaders may be failing to communicate clearly, members may have unrealistic expectations, or both may be true.
  • Too focused internally: Churches that focus primarily on their own business and on serving their members rarely have time or energy to reach out to their community, leading to decline over time.
Have you noticed any of these negative trends in your church over the past year? What is one step you can take this week to begin addressing it?
